Ashwani Kaul says about the surname Wali To the anonymous poster before me - If you would have read what the main page said - "This field being Yes does NOT imply that all Raina's are Kashmiri, it just says that some Raina's are Kashmiri" Similarly - Not all Wali's are Kashmiri, but some Wali's are kashmiri. No one is trying to prove anything here - this site just collects surnames and facts or stories about them. Please do not use inflammatory language like this here.

A Kaul says about the surname Chattabali This is not a real last name - it is a 'lakab' - to differentiate between two contemporary and famous individuals with the same name. One lived in Chattabal (near Karan Nagar) - hence the differentiation - Chattabali. It was never used officially by that person or his descendants. Any disagreements are welcome.

Rakesh Shah says about the surname Shah I know of only two or three kashmiri pandit families with this surname, besides ours. I have been told that we were Bhans and Shah is a conferred title which stuck on as a surname. I I don't know how/when/and by whom this title was given. Any information on this would be appreciated.
