A Kaul says about the surname Chattabali This is not a real last name - it is a 'lakab' - to differentiate between two contemporary and famous individuals with the same name. One lived in Chattabal (near Karan Nagar) - hence the differentiation - Chattabali. It was never used officially by that person or his descendants. Any disagreements are welcome.

Yasho says about the surname Wokhlu what about wakhalu? I remember a kashmiree researcher by this name in my field and the spelling of his name is definitely WAKHALU.. just curious...

Hari Kunzru says about the surname Kunzru Yes, Hari Kunzru is Kashmiri - at least his father's family are 100% Kashmiri pundits. His mother's family is English.

Makhan L. Sazawal says about the surname Sazawal We were origanally known by the surname of Tikoo and leter it changed to the surname of sazawal . Apprisal of relevant documents (J&K State Subject Certificates) of my father ,uncles and grand parents reveals that their surnames are indicated as Sazawal alias Tikoo.For any questions ,please contact the undersigned without hesitation. Meera Bagati says about the surname Bagati "Bagati" as far as I know was conferred on my great grandfather who used to own orchards/farmland in a avillage called "Bagat".Hence the name Bagati.

Rakesh Shah says about the surname Shah I know of only two or three kashmiri pandit families with this surname, besides ours. I have been told that we were Bhans and Shah is a conferred title which stuck on as a surname. I I don't know how/when/and by whom this title was given. Any information on this would be appreciated.

Roop Kishen Magazine says about the surname Magazine The surname is basically Magazine and not Magzine. We are actually “DATATREYIA KUALS. ” My great grandfather Pandit Raj Kaul of ZAINDAR MOHALLA, Habakadal; Srinagar was in Maharaja of Kashmir's services, and in charge of Army Magazine stores. In appreciation of his good work he was conferred the title of "MAGAZINE" by the Maharaja. Since then Pandit Raj Kaul was known as Pandit Raj Kaul Magazine. Even his descendants inherited the same surname. His sons are also known as Pandit Gwash Kaul Magazine, Pandit Lachman Kaul Magazine and so on. However, his great grand sons (My self being one amongst them) write only Magazine as a surname, as I write my name Roop Kishen Magazine instead of Roop Kishen Kaul Magazine. This is 100% authentic statement of mine being Pandit Raj Kaul Magazine's living descendant.

Rakesh Thaploo says about the surname Thalchoor Yes! this is a 100% Kashmiri Sirname. We stayed close to Roghnath mandir very close to Fateh kadal in Srinigar and we had good neighbours whose sirname was Thalchoor. I can very well coraborate this sirname. I guess that family now stays in Delhi. Hope this should put rest to all doubts. Regards Rakesh
