Ashwani Kaul says about the surname Boni I have heard (and most likely most have heard some variation) of the story about a person who had a "boonyi" (Chinar tree) in his yard and was named "boni" - then he cut it and what was left was a mound - he was named "teng" (for mound) and then he dug it up and waht was left was a hole in the ground and hence he was named "khoda" (for the hole) - who knows if this is actually true or a figment of the fertile and idle kashmir mind.

Dawood-Ebrahim Akhoon says about the surname akhoon I was always told this Surname is Arabic. Ergo, my great uncle before he passed away told me as far as he can recall that the original Akhoon's who migrated to the Far East came from Iraq and were islamic teachers. Also it should be noted that a variation of the work Akhoon is in ancient arabic,, and in that context it meant brother, and it applies in the sentance " A Muslim is Brother of another Muslim".
