Vinay Rambal says The word Rambal(in Kashmiri) means a geomancer(a type of astrologer). Geomancy or Ramal(Ramal Shastra-in Sanskrit/Hindi; Ilm-al Ramal- in Arabic) involves making predictions using a dice on a board sprinkled with sand.(Ramal is the Arabic word for sand- a testament to the syncretic Indo-Arabic origin of the art). A person who knows Ramal is called a Rammal which got colloquialised to Rambal in Kashmiri.
