Mustaq Ahmad Bhat says In Kashmir Saraf is a pet name for Brahmins. Most of these people were professionals or politicians. They probably got this because they had accumulated a lot of gold. It is not a family name but a title. In contrast for example Wani which means Wania (Bania) is a family name of a trader originating from the Sanskrit language.
