Fazeel says the word "JAN" is a kashmiri word meaning 'good' or 'righteous'. This surname was an epitaph given to the Qazi family of Ajas -Bandipora (Baramulla) due to their good deeds and help rendered to the local population. The surname has been adopted by many in Kashmir these days but the genesis of this surname resides with the orignal jan family which resided in Ajas-Bandipora and now has branched its scions at other places , in and outside J&K, mainly Srinagar and Jammu.
