Aleem Handoo says According to the Muhammad Din Fauq , In Kashmiri language , Handu are called the male sheep ( ram ) . this nickname was given to a pandit or man who was strong and healthy like a ram (sheep) ( means strong man ) . the branch of handoo pandits has produces many wise persons .[6] According to the People of Kashmir , In muslims there are three meanings of handoo surname . Firstly , Handoo families are educated class and traders or busniess family . Secondly , Handoo nickname was given to a man who was strong and healthy like a ram ( sheep ) ( means strong man) . Rajeev Hundoo says Handoo is also written as Handu and Hundoo. My forefathers have been writing Hundoo as Surname. This was changed to distinguish them selves from practicing Pandits/Gurus to scholars and who took service other than religion. My Great Great Grandfather Pt. Mehtab Rai Ji Hundoo, a great scholar of Sanskrit and Persian migrated from Kashmir and Joined the Court of Maharaja of Punjab as Minister.
