I have heard (and most likely most have heard some variation) of the story about a person who had a "boonyi" (Chinar tree) in his yard and was named "boni" - then he cut it and what was left was a mound - he was named "teng" (for mound) and then he dug it up and waht was left was a hole in the ground and hence he was named "khoda" (for the hole) - who knows if this is actually true or a figment of the fertile and idle kashmir mind.
