Bhim Sen says The word Ambardar is a Pashto word. It means a granary owner or a storekeeper. All Ambardars are originally from Rainawari, Srinagar, Kashmir, India. Their original surname was Pandit. One of their ancestors, Aftab Pandit, who lived in the second half of the eighteenth century, when Kashmir was ruled by the Afghans, managed a government granary. The family thus began to be called as Ambardars. Over time, the appelation Ambardar remained and Pandit dropped off. For more details read the critically acclaimed book "Days of Destiny" by Professor Shanti Swarup Ambardar. You will learn a lot about the Ambardars, about Rainawari, and the recent Kashmiri Pandit experience as a whole. It moved me to tears.

All Ambardar families have derived from Rainawari Srinagar Kashmir. I also heard Ambardar person was a minister of Maharaja in the past and he seems to be the actual ancestor of all ambardar's as such. This story was told me by Shuban Ambardar 35 years ago and he had a deep information of our ancestor.
